Constructing Public Opinion
Constructing Public Opinion
www.mediaed.org The media regularly use public opinion polls in their reporting of important news stories. But how exactly do they report them and to what end? In this insightful and accessible interview, Professor Justin Lewis demonstrates the way in which polling data are themselves used by the media to not just reflect what Americans think but instead to construct public opinion itself. Addressing vital issues (eg, the role the media play in "manufacturing consent" for political elites, what polls really tell us about public opinion, what Americans actually think about politics), Constructing Public Opinion provides a new way to think about the relationship between politics, media and the public. Exploding the myth that most Americans are moderate or conservative, Constructing Public Opinion demonstrates the way in which political elites help to promote the military industrial complex and how the media sustains belief in an electoral system with a built-in bias against the interests of ordinary people. Well illustrated with graphics and many examples of media coverage, it is the first film of its kind to present a critical analysis of media and public opinion.

Tough Guise: Violence, Media & the Crisis in Masculinity
Tough Guise: Violence, Media & the Crisis in Masculinity
www.mediaed.org While the social construction of femininity has been widely examined, the dominant role of masculinity has until recently remained largely invisible. Tough Guise is the first educational video geared toward college and high school students to systematically examine the relationship between pop-cultural imagery and the social construction of masculine identities in the US at the dawn of the 21st century. In this innovative and wide-ranging analysis, Jackson Katz argues that widespread violence in American society, including the tragic school shootings in Littleton, Colorado, Jonesboro, Arkansas, and elsewhere, needs to be understood as part of an ongoing crisis in masculinity. This exciting new media literacy tool-- utilizing racially diverse subject matter and examples-- will enlighten and provoke students (both males and females) to evaluate their own participation in the culture of contemporary masculinity.

4ZZ/4ZZZ - Construction of FM Radio Studios (Brisbane 1975)
4ZZ/4ZZZ - Construction of FM Radio Studios (Brisbane 1975)
Alternative Radio History in Brisbane, Australia: Video records station volunteers building the original 4ZZ/4ZZZ studios in the Basement of the UQ Union's Refectory Building, on the University of Queensland campus. As you will discover, a scintillating staple by staple, cut by cut and blow by blow insight into the 1975 construction of the community radio station's studios. (Live sound missing from tape.) These images represent rare, if not unique, archival footage recorded on now aging and deteriorating B&W video tape ... by someone seemingly high at the time or subsequently diagnosed with a severe case of attention deficit disorder. (As evidenced by the multiple zooms to the ceiling and floor and shots of blurred inanimate objects found every few seconds within the tape's raw footage!) However with the absolute worst of these camera excesses now removed, the tape has been given a rough edit only ... so as to retain and acknowledge the images of all those stations volunteers involved at the time. It was essentially these hard working people who helped make the 1975 launch of 4ZZ possible. Station's opening announcer (1975): John Woods (also seen within this video). Opening song: The Who's 'Won't get fooled again'. "You're listening to 4ZZ-FM Brisbane bringing you stereo FM rock on a frequency of 105.7 megahertz," John Woods announced at12 noon on the 8th December, 1975. 4ZZZ's first broadcast signaled a revolution in Australian radio. 4ZZZ was also the first community FM ...

KRS-One's STOP THE VIOLENCE MOVEMENT/Self-Construction 2008
QD3.com caught up with KRS-One about his STOP THE VIOLENCE MOVEMENT. Check the clip and log onto the links below for more info... www.stvmovement.org http About STOP THE VIOLENCE The Stop the Violence Movement (STVM) is a non-profit organization deeply rooted in the Hip Hop community with a mission to advance an ongoing series of movements to diminish global violence through education, critical dialogue, grassroots organizing and direct action. The STVM achieves its mission by providing organized programs, workshops, symposiums and media campaigns that heighten the awareness of the effects of violence, create multi-generational dialogue and supplies parent and youth oriented educational tools for conflict resolution. The STVM is calling upon fellow celebrities to take action. We are calling upon the mass media to address the images they put forth. We are calling for balance! Balance within ourselves, balance in the media, in our communities, in the world. The first step in preventing violence is to understand it. Violence is an unjust or unwarranted exertion of force or power. Violence is the diplomacy of the incompetent. Violence is unnecessary and costly. Violence kills what it intends to create. Violence is any activity that is consciously used to hurt oneself, another individual or group of people, whether through mind, body or spirit. "The question is no longer between violence and non-violence it is between non-violence and non-existence." -- Dr. Martin Luther King ...
